There was a time when the name Volvo was just synonymous with reliability, but in 2018, Volvo has upped its game quite a bit. Still as safe and reliable as ever, the European car manufacturer is looking sportier and running greener with its new line. Leading the way is the 2018 Volvo S90 Hybrid. Wondering what an S90 is? Here's everything you need to know about the next great hybrid luxury car.
Trim Levels
The Volvo S90 Hybrid comes in two levels of trim: Momentum and Inscription. The Momentum base level has an MSRP starting at $63,650, while the Inscription package starts at $68,150 and includes additional comfort, storage, and utility upgrades.
Engine
The 2018 Volvo S90 AWD T8 is a hybrid car that packs a lot of power into an environmentally friendly package. It comes stocked with an in-line 4-cylinder 2.0-liter Turbocharged/Supercharged engine and a 87-hp electric motor. Altogether, this hybrid engine delivers 400 horsepower and 472 pound-feet of torque, a surprising amount of power for a plug-in hybrid, and enough to go toe-to-toe with a lot of fully gasoline engines on the market.
Performance
The S90 comes standard with AWD technology, and a powertrain that is built to deliver a seamless driving experience. With an 8-Speed Geartronic Automatic Transmission, which has start/stop and adaptive shift, Volvo has taken extra care to ensure that the handoffs between the electric motor and the gasoline engine are smooth. The engine is isolated from the cabin to minimize road noise and deliver a quiet ride for you and your passengers. That being said, the S90 is not a sports car. The 245/40R-20 Pirelli P Zero performance tires provide great traction, but the Volvo S90 Hybrid may experience hard cornering at this size. However, the S90 gets great gas mileage, averaging 27-29 MPG, which is less than one might expect from a plug-in hybrid, but better than most luxury sedans that have this much horsepower.
Interior
The S90 comfortably seats five passengers with plenty of legroom. In fact, one of the big changes made to the 2018 S90 is a 4.5-inch-longer wheelbase in models shipped to the US. This makes a big difference in the space allotted to backseat passengers, who can sit quite comfortably and ride in style in the expanded rear seat. As with any luxury car, there are quite a few options to increase the comfort and luxurious styling of the S90. A fully-loaded Inscription model includes upgrades like a Bowers & Wilkins sound system, a head-up display, a convenience package with a power trunk lid, a 360-degree camera system, and park assist. The luxury interior is furnished with gorgeous sculpted wood and soft brown leather upholstery that make the driving experience even more fun.Â
Safety Features
The 2018 Volvo S90 Hybrid scored high on crash tests. Standard safety equipment includes front and side airbags as well as driver knee airbags, traction control, child safety rear door locks, backup camera, stability control, lane-keeping assist, and a blind-spot sensor.
